In Memory of Michele Plachy-Rubin

The Race For Research was founded in memory of Michele Plachy-Rubin. Michele was diagnosed with brain cancer in December 1996. Her friends and family started the race in 1997. Michele and her young son were able to participate the first year. Michele fought the disease valiantly but, unfortunately, lost her fight in May of 1998. The Cancer League of Colorado now operates the Race for Research in her memory.

Although the race was started as a tribute to Michele, her mother Sondra surprisingly was diagnosed with the same type of brain cancer several years after Michele, although the cancer was not genetically related. Sondra received treatment that was not available to her daughter because of advances in cancer research. "What is amazing to me is that many of the drugs that helped me were not even available to Michele 15 years ago," Sondra said. "They were in trial. Drugs have changed, treatments have changed, and technologies have changed because of research.  I never dreamed how important this race would mean to me personally." Cancer touches everyone. We all benefit from new treatments and approaches to cure or control cancer. Funds from the Race for Research go directly to cancer research right here in Colorado.
